Rescue operation

Jotun Arctic towing Fiesta

(For norsk versjon se nedenfor)

While we were in the Sermilik fjord another Norwegian sailboat (50 feet) Fiesta called us on the radio. They were having problems with their gear, and had lost their propulsion. At the moment they were very close to the shore, and there was a lot of current.

Being the only other vessel in the area we had to react quickly. We were only a few nautical miles away, but unfortunately we had 800 meters of wire in the water which first had to be hoisted. We aborted the scientific operation, got the wire on board and steamed towards Fiesta as fast as we could. Fiesta was drifting in a current of more than one knot between shoals and small islands. It was evident that the captain and crew had absolutely no idea of the severity of their situation as they were walking around on icebergs taking pictures instead of trying to get the boat into open water.

While we were getting towing ropes ready the depth had decreased from 40 meters to less than 8 meters. We headed the boats against the current and slowly started moving towards deeper water. When out in the fjord we zigzagged our way between the icebergs towards open water, and 6 hours later we arrived in Tasilaq. Re006 Jotun Arctic towing Fiesta.

Norsk versjon:
